The Maths Curriculum
“Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.” (National Curriculum 2013)
At Chasetown Community School we believe that mathematics is a fundamental life skill. Maths has a leading place in education and in society. Maths equips pupils with the uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in everyday life. It is integral to all aspects of life, and with this in mind, we endeavour to ensure that pupils develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them.
We want to inspire our pupils to use mathematics to make rich connections and develop the necessary skills to make them “deep thinkers”, acquiring maths skills that can be recalled quickly and applied across the areas of maths and use their knowledge in other areas of the curriculum.
At Chasetown Community School we aim to develop effective consistent teaching of mathematics, which is lively, engaging and involves a carefully planned blend of approaches that direct children’s learning. We aim to teach pupils how to make sense of the world around them by developing their ability to calculate, reason and solve problems. Our mathematics teaching aims to present pupils with mathematical experiences concerned with number, measurement, geometry, statistics, ratio and proportion and algebra.
We aim to develop an enjoyment in mathematics through a positive attitude and a confident self-image of the children’s mathematical abilities. Our mathematics teaching allows pupils to have mathematical experiences that are relevant, interesting and allow understanding, curiosity and creativity to develop. We aim to assist pupils to think purposefully in a mathematical context and to develop their abilities to persevere and organise themselves around a task. Our main aim is to develop in pupils an awareness of mathematics as a powerful tool of communication and explanation and to enable them to communicate their ideas whether they are working independently or as a member of a group.
