Modern Foreign Languages

The Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum

As the UK is becoming an increasingly multi-cultural society, we have a duty to provide our pupils with an understanding of other cultures and languages. We believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to develop their ability to communicate in a foreign language. This year all of our pupils will be learning to speak, read and write Spanish.

Our aims, in-line with the National Curriculum, are:

  • · To teach pupils to listen to, speak, read and write in Spanish
  • · To provide pupils with an enriching and exciting curriculum
  • · To develop communication skills and confidence, within an appropriate and meaningful context
  • · To awaken an interest in different cultures and lifestyles
  • · To give a sound start for further development at Key Stage 3 and beyond

We will teach the pupils to know and understand how to:

  • · Ask and answer questions
  • · Use correct pronunciation and intonation
  • · Memorise words
  • · Interpret meaning
  • · Understand basic grammar
  • · Use bilingual dictionaries
  • · Work in pairs and groups to communicate in a foreign language
  • · Look at life in another culture

We want teaching and learning of Spanish to be an easy, fun experience for both pupils and teachers using a variety of teaching resources, and therefore ensuring that all pupils make appropriate progress in their knowledge and skills with increased confidence.

Spanish is taught on a rolling programme called ‘Hola Espaol’ provided by JMB Education.
