Phonics - Read, Write, Inc

The Read, Write, Inc Curriculum

At Chasetown Community School our aim is to support the pupils in climbing the ladder with reading. We believe that reading is a foundation to learning. The phonics programme that Chasetown Community School uses to help pupils succeed with this is Read, Write, Inc.

What is Read Write Inc?

Read Write Inc. (RWI) is a phonic programme for pupils from Reception to Year 4 and children with SEND in older year groups. RWI is taught using a whole school approach meaning no matter what class the pupil is in, they will be able to continue their reading journey at the same speed and rate regardless. All our class based staff are trained in delivering RWI and it is ensured that RWI it is being delivered in the same way across the school through monitoring by the reading lead of Read, Write, Inc and external monitoring

What we do in Phonic Lessons?

  • A structured daily 20-minute phonics lesson. Here at Chasetown Community we call this the speed sound lesson.
  • Spelling and writing activities.
  • Comprehensive questions.
  • Quality reading time with an adult.

Pupils that are struggling with reading but have the basics phonics skills progress to Fresh Start.

What is Fresh Start?

Fresh Start is a systematic synthetic phonics programme for struggling readers aged 9 – 13+ years. Pupils are taught at their challenge point, so they learn to read accurately and fluently in just 20 minutes a day.

What do we in the Fresh Start lessons?

  • We develop reading fluency and read with comprehension.
  • Spell and write with confidence.
  • Speed sounds.
  • Daily fresh start module lessons.
  • 33 Modules with age-appropriate decodable fiction and non-fiction texts.
  • Activities to develop pupils’ comprehension, spelling and punctuation.
  • We use the Seven Anthologies for extra reading practice in school or at home.

Every day, pupils will learn 3 new sounds a week and will review previous sounds the other 2 days. They apply what they’ve been taught by reading words containing the sounds they know in age-appropriate stories and non-fiction texts which is matched to their phonic knowledge. By the end of the programme, they are able to read accurately and fluently.

How is Read, Write, Inc Assessed?

Our pupils are assessed every half term to ensure the progress is tracked or challenge areas are identified and extra support is put in place. This may be with interventions. Each pupil on the programme has an individual progression record, which identifies the pupils’ individual needs and targets the area that require more practice. Assessments determine what group the pupils will be in, this will be in same ability groups or 1-1 support.
