Music

The Music Curriculum

Music is a fundamental attribute of the human population. Virtually all cultures, from the most primitive to the most advanced, make music. This has been true throughout history. A varied group of studies suggests that music may enhance human health and performance.

By engaging pupils in making and responding to music, Chasetown Community School offers them the opportunities to:

  • Develop their understanding and appreciation of a wide range of music;
  • Extend their own interests and increase their ability to offer opinions on various music styles;
  • Acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to make music;
  • Develop the skills, attitudes and attributes that are needed in life, e.g. listening skills, concentration, creativity, intuition, self-confidence, perseverance and sensitivity towards others.

Pupils will be taught knowledge skills and understanding through:

  • A range of musical activities that integrate performing, composing and appraising;
  • Responding to a wide range of musical starting points;
  • Working on their own, in groups and as a class;
  • Using ICT to create and manipulate sounds;
  • A range of music from different times and cultures.

Pupils will also be given the opportunity to learn an instrument such as guitar, violin, keyboard or drums. Pupils who choose to learn an instrument may be invited to audition for Chasetown Community School “rock band.”

We endeavour to ensure that all the pupils at Chasetown Community School have access to a broad music curriculum.

The curriculum recognises that the personal development of pupils plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. Music offers opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive caring attitude to others, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of cultures.
