The PSHE Curriculum

At Chasetown Community School we are aware that all of our pupils live in an increasingly complex and uncertain world.

PSHE enables pupils to become healthy, confident, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community; in so doing we help to develop their sense of self-worth. We teach them how society is organised and governed and about rights and responsibilities. They learn to appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse multicultural society. PSHE helps pupils to acquire the skills, knowledge and understanding, attitudes and values, which are necessary to make sense of their life experiences and to feel confident and informed.

Following the recent pandemic, we recognised that the mental health and wellbeing of all of our stakeholders was paramount. In respect of our pupils, we have incorporated the teaching of relevant topics (such as resilience and wellbeing) into our PSHE/RSHE/RHE curriculum and into other areas of school life.

We recognise that we are living in an ever-changing online world that has the potential to create both immense opportunities and challenges in our pupils’ academic, personal and social lives. As a result, our PHSE curriculum and the RSHE/RHE content needs to reflect this. We also recognise the importance of being willing and able to modify and reflect this based on the requirements of individual pupils, groups or classes.

The aims of the Personnel, Health and Social Education (PSHE) curriculum at Chasetown Community School are to:

Health and Wellbeing

  • Know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle.
  • Know how to maintain physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing.
  • Be aware of safety issues, including how to respond in an emergency.
  • Know how to manage change, including puberty, transition and loss.

 Relationships

  • Develop and maintain a variety of healthy relationships within a range of social and cultural context.
  • Know how to recognise and manage emotions within a range of relationships.
  • Know how to recognise risky or negative relationships, including all forms of bullying and abuse and ask for help.
  • Know how to respect equality and diversity.

Living in the Wider World

  • Know the importance of responsible behaviours and actions.
  • Be responsible and independent members of our school community.
  • Be positive and active members of a democratic society.
  • Know about the importance of respecting and protecting the environment.
  • Develop self-confidence and self- esteem and make informed choices regarding personal and social issues.
  • Develop good relationships with other members of the school and the wider community.
  • Know about where money comes from, keeping it safe and the importance of managing it effectively.
  • Have a basic understanding of enterprise.
  • Lessons will cover all the core themes of ‘Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.’ These topics will be taught in a manner that is relevant to pupils and will build on and enhance pupils’ experiences. Our intention is to provide a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge, skills and attributes year on year, as the core themes are revisited and so ensuring that the sequence of work from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 is suitably effective for our respective pupils.

The aims of relationship and sex education (RSHE) and Relationship Education (RHE) at Chasetown Community School are to:

  • Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place.
  • Make pupils aware of the associated importance of health and hygiene.
  • Prepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene.
  • Help pupils develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy.
  • Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships.
  • Reflect Chasetown Community’s values and ethos – values that include good manners, respect and co-operation and an ethos to provide a secure, happy and stimulating environment to promote a positive attitude to learning.
  • To create a PSHE education curriculum, which includes Relationship Education for Key Stage 2 pupils and Relationship and Sex Education for Key Stage 3 pupils, together with health education for all pupils.
  • To help pupils examine RSHE in the context of healthy and loving relationships and family life. RSHE can help pupils develop a positive self-image, high self-esteem, responsibility for themselves and others and the ability to start to consider informed decisions.
  • To encourage pupils to manage emotions and relationships confidently and sensitively whilst developing self-respect and empathy for others. Pupils are taught to make choices based on an understanding of difference, with an absence of prejudice and learning how to develop communication skills and to start developing assertiveness within a range of different situations.
  • To focus understanding of physical development at appropriate stages. Pupils will explore changes during puberty and reproduction (enhancing what is taught in Science lessons) as well as learning.
  • To teach a curriculum that equips pupils for life in the 21st
  • To support all pupils in this stage of their education.
